词汇 | sidekick |
词源 | sidekick. Side pants pockets are the hardest pockets for pick- pockets to pick because they are closer to the hands of a victim and are constantly moving with the motions of the legs. About 1900, according to one story, men wise to the ways of pick- pockets began keeping their wallets in their side pockets or side-kicks (kick being slang for a pants pocket since the 17th century). Side-kickers then became a slang synonym for a faith- ful buddy (usually male), a partner always at one’s side. O. Hen- ry first recorded the term in a 1904 story, and about 10 years later side-kick was shortened to sidekick. |
