词汇 plant
词源
plant; plantation. Seeds and saplings were tucked into the soil and then stamped down into the ground with the sole of the foot by early Roman farmers, just as they are by gardeners today. From this process grew the word plant, which derives from the Latin planta, for “sole of the foot.” The Latin word plantatio, “propagation of a plant, as from cuttings,” is the source of our word plantation, used to describe a large estate or farm, or any area under cultivation. Plantation used in the sense of the early American “Plimoth Plantation” extended the word to mean the planting of a colony in a new land or country. See also plantain; pilgrim.
