词汇 king kong
词源
King Kong. Slang for a big, monsterlike man, or for a power- ful cheap wine, after the eponymous apelike beast in the movie King Kong. But King Kong of Skull Island was not really 50 feet tall and 60 feet broad, as RKO publicists claimed. Kong was created by genius model maker Willis H. O’Brien, who used six different models of the gorilla in the 1933 movie, which was first called The Beast, then The Eighth Wonder. Each of these miniature models, 18 inches high, had moving parts that ena- bled the gorilla to be filmed performing various scenes. When Kong scales the Empire State Building with actress Fay Wray in hand, for example, an 18-inch model of the beast holds a six- inch model of Miss Wray as he ascends the clearly phallic sym- bol. For close-ups, however, O’Brien did create a giant King Kong head 18 feet high, which was covered with hair from the skins of 80 bears, according to a studio PR release. Its eyes were about a foot long, its nose two feet long, and its six-foot-long mouth was big enough to hide several men inside. These hid- den technicians operated controls that could move Kong’s eyes, mouth, and neck. Later, in 1976, a remake of King Kong fea- tured a 40-foot-high model of Kong (built at a cost of $24 mil- lion) that required 20 technicians to operate. However, the film was a financial flop, even though it won an Academy Award for visual effects
