词汇 | kismet |
词源 | Kismet; Kiss me, Hardy. Kismet comes from Persian quis- mat, meaning “division, portion, lot,” which in turn derives from Arabic quismah, meaning the same. One’s lot or portion is one’s fate or fortune, and this became the meaning of the word when it came into English as kismet at the beginning of the 19th century. Some writers believe that Lord Nelson said, “Kismet, Hardy” (not “Kiss me, Hardy”) to Captain Thomas Hardy as Nelson lay dying after the Battle of Trafalgar, meaning it was his fate to die after his great victory. Other authorities, including Partridge, find this theory improbable. |
