词汇 | king of dullness |
词源 | King of Dullness. After Shakespearian scholar Lewis Theo- bald (1688–1744) exposed Alexander Pope’s errors as an editor of Shakespeare, the great poet retaliated by making him the King of Dullness in his Dunciad (1728). In the final edition of the satire, however, Pope enthroned Poet Laureate Colley Cib- ber (1671–1757) as king of Dullness, and Cibber has been stuck with his monarchy and monicker ever since. A rather rude, vain man with more talent for acting than writing, Cibber nev- ertheless was made poet laureate in 1730. Pope disliked his work, his appointment as laureate, and his literary criticism of Pope. See also namby-pamby. |
