词汇 hypochondriac
词源
hypochondriac. Hypochondriac, for a person morbidly anx- ious about his health, comes from the Greek hypo, “below, un- der,” and chondros, “rib cartilages.” This is puzzling until one learns that “under” the “rib cartilages” lies the upper abdomen, once thought to be the seat of melancholy. Hypochondriac is first recorded in its modern sense midway through the 17th century. German poet and dramatist Oscar von Redwitz (1823–91) may not have written of suffering as well as Goethe or Rilke, but he certainly suffered more—at least in his mind. Probably history’s greatest hypochondriac, the baron is said to have visited a doctor every day of his life from the time he was 40, complaining of fully 10,000 different ailments or symptoms. For all his ailments, he lived until he was 68, a ripe old age for his time.
