词汇 | clover |
词源 | clover. Rather than the other way around, as one might ex- pect, the clover of the Trifolium genus takes its name from the suit of clubs at cards, which was claver in Old English. The four-leaf clover has, of course, long been a symbol of luck, hav- ing one more leaf than clovers usually do (this tradition was first recorded in about 1840), but there have been several au- thenticated cases of people finding 14-leaf clovers. Someone who is “in clover” is well nourished, rich, and happy. This American metaphor, first recorded in 1847, has its source in the protein-rich clover species used here for fattening cattle. See like pigs in clover. |
