tumbleweed. Any of several plants, including the Amaran- thus genus and the Russian thistle (Salsola kali), whose branch- ing upper parts come loose from the roots and are driven by the wind across the prairie. The plant, like sagebrush, has be- come a symbol of the West, as in song lyrics such as “drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweed.” One old belief has it that God put tumbleweed here to show cowboys which way the wind is blowing. The plant was originally imported to the U.S. as a border hedge! |
