词汇 tulip
词源
tulip. Of all the foolish investment schemes the world has known, the 17th-century tulipomania was certainly one of the most reckless. Starting in Holland, the mania for the purchase of tulip bulbs spread throughout Europe and rose to its height from 1634 to 1637, when investors purchased bulbs for more than $10,000 each and people lost fortunes on speculations in unusual bulbs that often came to nothing. The tulip takes its name from a Latinized version of an Arabic word for “turban,” an allusion to the shape of the flower. Tulips were first grown in Turkey and brought with the Turks to Europe when they in- vaded the Continent. They have since become one of the most popular flowers in the world, with thousands of varieties avail- able. See also mulberry.
