词汇 | clown white |
词源 | clown white. White makeup once used for clowns on the stage and in the circus. It is said that Thespis himself painted his face with white lead before he invented the unpainted linen mask of the Greeks. From earliest times, actors used such dan- gerous substances for makeup. In the religious dramas of medi- eval times, for example, white lead and gold paint were applied to the face and hands of actors portraying Christ, even though they were known to be poisonous. In 1513, “a naked gilded child,” who was supposed to represent the golden age, died af- ter being painted gold. |
