词汇 | tug of war |
词源 | tug of war. Lord Byron used the phrase tug of war in Don Juan (1819–24), but not to describe the popular game of that name. In the game two teams pull on opposite sides of a thick rope, each trying to pull (tug) the other side over the dividing line between them. The words in this sense were first recorded in an 1876 British magazine article: “The tug of war was the most popular item in Saturday’s entertainment.” At “The Pull,” held annually in Michigan’s Hope College since 1898, two teams pulled for three hours and 51 minutes before one team was tugged over the line—a record for the event there. |
