词汇 | paradise |
词源 | paradise. The extensive parks and pleasure gardens of the Persian kings were the first paradises, for the word comes to us from the Greek paradeisos, meaning “park,” “orchard,” or “plea- sure gardens,” which the Greeks borrowed from a similar Per- sian word. Such gardens, and the word for them, were known more than 3,000 years ago in the Near East, where they were such prized retreats that they took on religious significance. The Septuagint translators of the Bible adopted the word as a name for the Garden of Eden, and later it was used by early Christian writers to mean heaven itself. See also garden of eden. |
