Green Berets. Another name for the U.S. Special Forces, which are the core of the American Special Operations Com- munity. These elite troops are named for the dashing green be- rets they wear as part of their uniform and are thought to num- ber over 10,000. They are trained mainly at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina (“The Schoolhouse”), especially in guerrilla fighting. The first Green Berets were advisers to the South Viet- namese army in the early 1960s. Green Beanies is a derogatory or humorous term for the Green Berets. |
