Great John L. After well over a century, the name of swash- buckling John Lawrence Sullivan (1858–1918) remains synon- ymous for a great fighter, up there with Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Mohammed Ali. Reigning as the bare-knuckle heavyweight champion of the world from 1882 until he retired in 1896, he lost only to Gen- tleman Jim Corbett (in an 1892 bout fighting with gloves under the Queensberry rules). Nobody ever beat Sullivan with bare knuckles, although Jack Kilrain once took him 75 rounds. After he retired, Sullivan became, to everyone’s great surprise, a tem- perature advocate. The Great John L. was also called the Boston Strongboy, the Boston Hercules, Boston’s Pet, Boston’s Pride and Joy, the Boston Miracle, the Young Boston Giant, Boston’s Goliath, and Boston’s Philanthropic Prizefighter, among many more nicknames.
