Great Smokies. The Great Smokies area takes its name from the Cherokee name for the mountains, which translates as “The Place of Blue Smoke.” The mountain range, on the North Carolina-Tennessee border, is apparently the only American range with great attached to its name. Also called the Great Smoky Mountains, Smoky Mountains, and, most poetically, Land of the Sky. |
