词汇 great majority
词源
great majority. A humorous British term, with some Ameri- can use, for the dead, as in “Even there among the great majori- ty you can bet he’s a voice of dissent.” The term was coined by British poet Edward Young, who joined the great majority in 1765, when he was 82, but Young apparently got the idea from the vivacious first-century Roman satirist and elegantiae arbiter (arbiter of taste) Petronius, who in his Satyricon, among his many great works, wrote Abiit ad plures, “he’s gone to join the majority.” Petronius also coined or first recorded the common expression ages ago (olim oliorum) and the famous phrase the studied felicity of Horace. He took his own life in a.d. 65, when he felt he had fallen out of favor with the emperor Nero.
