At any rate, the exclamation Great Scott! hasn’t been traced back before Old Fuss-and-Feathers’ day and he could certainly have been responsible for the expression in one way or another. That the term is just a euphemism for “Great God!,” a play on the German Gott, is a simpler but not neces- sarily truer explanation.
