词汇 green
词源
green. The word green (deriving from the Old English grene) has long signified the color of youth (“ripe in years but green in heart”) and the color of envy or jealousy (the “green-eyed mon- ster” in Shakespeare’s Othello). Green is also the color that means to proceed, as in green light, and it has been recruited re- cently as the color of environmentalists and political parties es- pousing environmentalism. These meanings are not the same in many other languages; in fact, Americans do not use many meanings of green found in other languages. In French, for ex- ample, to be green to someone means “to bear that person a grudge”; to get a green reply means a “tart reply”; green tale re- fers to a spicy story; green language signifies slang. In Spanish, a green old man refers to an old reprobate, and giving oneself a green means “to take time off from work.” It should be noted that Germans are not green with envy but “yellow with envy”; they use the expression beaten green and blue, not beaten black and blue; and when they feel sick or nauseated, they say “get green and yellow before the eyes.”
