Great Knives; great medicine; Great Spirit. Several Native American terms for great things. Great Knives referred to U.S. soldiers, in reference to their bayonettes; great medicine meant anything especially effective; explorers Lewis and Clark noted that whatever is mysterious or unintelligible (to the Indians) is called “great medicine”; and Great Spirit refers to the chief deity in the religion of many North American Indian tribes.
