词汇 orange
词源
orange. The Sanskrit word narange became the Latin aurang- ia, “golden apple,” from which our orange derives. Portugals is a name still used for sweet oranges in Greece, Albania, Italy, and the Middle East, for bitter oranges were the only oranges known in Europe until Portuguese ships brought sweet oranges back from India in 1529. Later, in 1645, still-sweeter Chinese oranges reached Lisbon, and they are responsible for the scientific name for the modern sweet orange, Citrus sinensis (sinensis is Latin for “Chinese”). Sweet oranges were a luxury enjoyed mainly by royalty until the mid 19th century. Thousands of varieties of fruits are named after their developers, and in this regard the orange is no exception. The best-known eponymous orange va- riety is the Temple. Others include the Murcott Honey orange, named for Florida grower Charles Murcott Smith, and the Par- son Brown, which honors Nathan L. Brown, a Florida clergy- man. The United States is by far the largest grower of oranges, producing more than 25 billion a year. An orange’s color, inci- dentally, has nothing to do with its ripeness. Oranges turn or- ange only as a result of cold weather, which breaks down a membrane protecting their green chlorophyll. This is why sum- mer oranges are often dyed and stamped with the words “color added.” Long the traditional decoration for a bride in England, the orange blossom is said to indicate purity because of its whiteness, and fruitfulness because the orange tree is so prolific.
