reciprocity. Reciprocity refers to a mutual interchange of fa- vors or privileges, the word deriving from the Latin reciprocus, “alternating.” In the Analects of Confucius, the Chinese sage rat- ed reciprocity highly. “Tsze-king asked, ‘Is there one word which may serve as a rule of practice for all one’s life.’ The mas- ter said, ‘Is not reciprocity such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.” See golden rule. |
