raw deal. Very unfair or harsh treatment, the Oxford English Dictionary of Slang (1912) defines it as “a bare-faced swindle,” which seems to be its earliest recorded mention. The expres- sion is widely used in the United States, especially in its sense of “very unfair treatment.” The “raw” in the phrase suggests that someone so treated feels unclothed, naked. |
