词汇 | received pronunciation |
词源 | received pronunciation. Variously called R.P., BBC English, the King’s English, London English, the Oxford accent and South- ern Educational Standard, this is a pronunciation of British En- glish reflecting the past cultural and social predominance of the speech of southern England. It was once the characteristic speech of the English public (private) schools and Oxford and Cambridge Universities, which led to its being adopted as the pronunciation used in broadcasting. It is of course no better or worse than any other pronunciation. There is no similar stan- dard of speech in American English, though at one time the so- called Harvard accent and the General American dialect (used by American broadcasters) were touted as such. Broadcasters do, however, avoid using regional accents. |
