词汇 | rebel yell |
词源 | rebel yell; Texas yell. A leading expert believes that the rebel yell, or yalo, originally used in combat in the Civil War and in- tended to strike terror into the hearts of the enemy, came from the Creek Indians, loosely combining “the turkey gobbler’s cry with a series of yelps.” The high-pitched, blood-chilling yell was borrowed by Texans and adopted for their Texas yell. But oth- ers say the Texans got their yell from the Comanche Indians. In any case, everyone agrees that the “Yah-hoo” or “Yaaaaaheee” of fiction writers sounds nothing like the rebel yell. Several ex- perts believe it is a corruption of the old English foxhunting cry tallyho! |
