词汇 real mccoy
词源
real McCoy. Kid McCoy happened to hear a barroom brag- gart claim that he could lick any of the McCoys around—any time, any place. The Kid, then at the top of his boxing division, promptly delivered his Sunday punch in person. When the challenger came to, he qualified his statement by saying that he had only meant that he could beat any of the other fighters around who were using the Kid’s name, not the real McCoy himself. In another version of the story, which also takes place in a saloon, a heckler sneers that if the Kid was the real McCoy, he’d put up his dukes and prove it. McCoy does so and the heckler, rubbing his jaw from his seat in the sawdust, exclaims, “That’s the real McCoy, all right.” But there have been numer- ous, unproved explanations for the origin of the real McCoy for “the genuine, the real thing.” Still another is that advertise- ments of Kid McCoy’s fights proclaimed that the real McCoy, and not some imitation, would appear. The fabulous Kid Mc- Coy won the welterweight title in 1896, but outgrew his class; he was once ranked by Ring Magazine as the greatest light heavyweight of all time, though he never held this title. It is possible that the cachet of his name may have been strength- ened by the ring exploits of Al McCoy, who held the middle- weight title from 1917 to 1919. Certainly there were a lot of McCoys around in the early days of boxing, among the myriad Mysterious Billy Smiths, Dixie Kids, Honey Melodys and Phila- delphia Jack O’Briens. But which McCoy is the real McCoy re- mains open to debate; he may not even have been a boxer. For example, another tale has it that the real McCoy was African- American inventor Elijah McCoy, whose machine for lubricat- ing the parts of a steam train engine was widely popular and in- spired many inferior knock-offs.
