Meaning a standard of paper, usually 500 sheets, ream comes from the Arabic risma, “a bundle of clothes.” The expla- nation for this seemingly odd derivation stems from the fact that the Arabs learned from the Chinese how to make paper out of rags instead of papyrus and passed the technique and the word on to Europe.
