词汇 razorback
词源
razorback. A wild hog common in the southern U.S. that people often tamed and let roam free to forage for its food. The Americanism, traced back to about 1815, was inspired by the hog’s ridge-like back. It was an argument over the ownership of a razorback hog that initiated the bloody Hatfield-McCoy feud that lasted from about 1873 to 1890 in the mountains of Ken- tucky and West Virginia. A Hatfield-McCoy feud itself became a synonym still occasionally used for any feud between families or neighbors. In fact, the Hatfields and McCoys are still feud- ing, though in a less violent way. A recent news item (12/23/01) advises that “In Pikesville, Ky., descendants of the Hatfield and McCoy clans, which battled each other in a famous, bloody feud from 1878 to 1890, are apparently still sore. In a lawsuit, the McCoys claim the Hatfields control access to a cemetery and won’t let them get in.” Like many Americans, they’re get- ting more litigious.
