词汇 | brogue |
词源 | brogue. One theory holds that the brogue long associated with the Irish derives from the Gaelic barrog, for “a wrestling hold”—Irish tongues were held by tradition and couldn’t speak any other way. A rival theory says that brogue comes from the heavy brogans (from the Gaelic brog, “shoe”) worn by Irish peasants, who usually spoke with what we now call a brogue. |
