hotfoot. U.S. author Damon Runyon was the first to record and define the practical joke called a hotfoot, in a 1937 story. Wrote Runyon: “The way you give a hotfoot is to sneak up be- hind some guy, stick a paper match in his shoe between the sole and the upper . . . and then light the match.” This is usually done while the practical joker’s confederate distracts the vic- tim. The word is not related to hotfoot meaning “rapidly, with speed,” as in “Let’s hotfoot it out of here.” |
