词汇 | hotshot |
词源 | hotshot. Hotshot refers to an aggressive, often flamboyant or vain, highly successful person, such as a hotshot lawyer or a hotshot athlete. The word was recorded as far back as 1600 in the sense of a reckless, hot-tempered troublemaker, this defini- tion giving rise to the present one. The OED states the early “reckless” definition was suggested by a person who “shoots with a firearm ‘hotly’ or eagerly.” Others claim its ancestor was a piece of shot hot from firing, or made hot to spread flames among enemy land or sea forces. |
