hot potato. Hot potato can mean a “delicate situation,” some- thing to be handled with great care. It is said to derive from the phrase drop someone (or something) like a hot potato and was first recorded in 1950. Over 70 years older, however, is hot po- tato for an energetic person or for a sexy woman, the last some- times called a hot patootie, which was apparently an American invention during World War I.
