hostages to fortune. Francis Bacon (1561–1626) coined this phrase in the first sentence of his essay “Of Marriage and Single Life.” “He that hath wife and children hath given hostages to fortune; for they are impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or of mischief.” This simply means that we will behave and hesitate to take risks if we have loved ones, because they will suffer if we don’t—they will pay for our sins. |
