brig. Brig, for “a prison on a ship,” is an Americanism first re- corded in 1852. One theory has it that pirates called “brigands” sailed on “brigandines” or “brigantines,” small, two-masted sailing vessels, the name of which was soon shortened to brig. Since the brigands were criminals and were often in jail, the name of the type of ship they sailed supposedly became associ- ated with jail cells. |
