Australia. Captain Matthew Flinders is the second of only two men in history who alone named a continent. The English navigator named Australia in 1803, after sailing completely around it. It had previously been known from the 16th century as Terra Australis, “the southern land.” For the first person to name a continent see america and the story of the mapmaker who could be credited with naming both North America and South America—though his map depicted only the area we now know as South America, and he did not realize that he was naming a continent.
