autantonym. An autantonym (from the Greek for “self ” plus “antonym”) is a word that has come to mean its opposite. An example is the word fast, which in the case of a fast runner means a runner who runs rapidly, but in the case of a fast color means a color that doesn’t run at all. The word seems to have been coined in the last 50 years or so. Another example of an autantonym is raze/raise. |
