词汇 cerberus
词源
Cerberus. The many-headed dog of Greek mythology who guards the entrance of the infernal regions. Cerberus (pro- nounced Sir-burr-rus) has been represented with from three to 100 heads, with snakes for hair and the tail of a serpent. De- scribed by Lucretius, Horace, Ovid, and Virgil, among other great Latin poets, the huge and fearsome guardian of the gates of the Underworld gives his name to any formidable and often surly guard or gatekeeper, animal or human. Cerberus was not infallible: Hercules dragged him back to Earth in his legendary 12th labor and Orpheus lulled him to sleep with his lyre. The myth of the watchdog of Hell has its roots in the ancient Egyp- tian custom of guarding graves with dogs. See give a sop to cerberus.
