词源 | Central Park. Work began on the great Manhattan park in 1857 based on designs by Frederick Law Olmsted and Cal- vert Vaux. The park was partially inspired by public grounds in great European cities and was meant to improve New York’s reputation and provide a recreational area for its citi- zens. The orginal grounds covered 700 acres running from 59th Street to 106th Street between Fifth Avenue and Eighth Avenue. Olmsted and Vaux’s design called for a combination of pastoral settings and recreational facilities and included features such as the Sheep Meadow and carriage drives. The park opened in 1859 and in 1863 its northern edge moved to 110th Street, increasing the grounds to 843 acres. In the 1930s progressive reformers and Parks Commissioner Rob- ert Moses built numerous playgrounds at the park’s edges, constructed ballfields, renovated the zoo, and increased rec- reational activities. Since its opening, the park has been an important part of New York life, particularly in summertime. Among the park’s best-known features are the Children’s Zoo, the Delacorte Theater, the Carousel, the Great Lawn, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Tavern on the Green restaurant. |
