词汇 | cento |
词源 | cento. The Roman poet Virgil (70–19 b.c.) was so popular in ancient times that an artificial poem called the cento, a “patch- work” or “crazy quilt” poem, was made by putting together bits of lines of his poetry. Much later, Virgil’s epic poem, The Ae- neid, became so venerated that it was used to foretell the future. A page, selected by opening a volume at random, supposedly could predict what was to come. |
