Black Hand. The late 19th-century and 20th-century precur- sor of the American Mafia. The Black Hand, Neopolitan in origin, embraced all crimes but specialized in extortion. Many letters sent to their victims had the imprint of a black hand upon them. Black Hand was also the name of the Slav secret so- ciety that planned the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which led to World War I. |
