blackout. In the sense of turning off or concealing lights be- fore an enemy air raid, blackout dates back to the London blitz at the start of World War II. The term was used before this to mean the extinguishing of all stage lights to signal the end of a scene in a play, to indicate the passing of time, or to mark the end of a vaudeville skit.
