As one of the judges who tried the Salem witchcraft trials in 1632, Samuel Sewall, a very humane person, publicly accepted “the blame and shame” for all of them when he discovered the error of his ways (19 people wrongly found guilty of witch- craft). Thereafter, he annually spent a day of fasting and prayer. |
