black widow spider. The little jet-black American spider La- trodectus mactans is called a widow because it eats its mate. Spiders, however, are often cannibalistic. Generally, spider ven- om causes no harm to humans, but the venom of the black widow spider causes pain and can be fatal. A black widow can be identified by a red mark shaped like an hourglass on its un- derside. See the female of the species; spider. |
