sunbeam. A ray or rays of sunlight. The term would have been column of light, but the ninth-century translator of the Venerable Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People), written in Latin in 731, could not translate the Latin phrase columna lucis, “col- umn of light,” having no word for column in his Old English vocabulary. Instead, he used sunne for lucis and beam, which meant “a building post,” for columna, making the new word sunnebeam, this eventually becoming sunbeam. |
