词源	State of the Union message. George Washington delivered the first State of the Union message to Congress, though it was called the Annual Address at the time. It reports on the state of the nation and is also called the State of the Union address. The speech is required of the president by the U.S. Constitution (Article II, Section 3). It was not called the State of the Union message until 1945.
