词汇 | starfish |
词源 | starfish. Crammedtogethercloserthanthis, each no bigger than the period ending this sentence, more than 1,000 tiny globules cling tenaciously to a handful of seaweed as they begin assuming their star shapes. Vaguely, the living, changing “nurse” eggs begin to resemble small asterisks, and then a few weeks later the five points of their stars suddenly become clearly visible. From a smattering of stardust, hundreds of sea stars, or starfish, that can be so many varied colors—orange, yellow, red, purple—are finally born to human eyes. Though the word star- fish was first recorded about 1530, the sea creatures were known to earliest man, less for their beauty than for their destructive raids against oysters, clams, and coral reefs (including Austral- ia’s Great Barrier Reef). Another name for them is the walking stomach of the sea, because they actually eat with their stom- achs, which they can push out through the mouth centrally lo- cated beneath their bodies and digest food on the spot. After dining, this amazing stomach proceeds to double as an excreto- ry system. See regeneration. |
