词汇 | starvation |
词源 | starvation. On March 6, 1775, Henry Dundas, first viscount Melville (1742–1811), made a Parliamentary speech speculat- ing whether famine would result in America because of a 1775 British bill restricting trade with Britain’s New England colo- nies. Dundas said he was “afraid” famine “would not be pro- duced from the Act.” This hard-hearted remark inspired author Horace Walpole and others to later nickname him “Starvation Dundas” and “Starvation,” names he would be remembered by through the rest of his days and through history. The OED says that despite the absence of confirmation it is “not improbable” that Dundas used starvation before anyone else, and he may even have coined the word, but an examination of the records reveals that he did not employ starvation in his Parliament speech, as some sources claim. |
