词汇 statue of liberty
词源
Statue of Liberty. The statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, better known as the Statue of Liberty, is, of course, as much a symbol of the United States as Uncle Sam. The colossal 152-foot statue of a woman with uplifted arm holding a burn- ing torch stands at the entrance to New York Harbor. It was a gift from France to the United States, designed by French sculp- tor Frédéric Auguste Barthold; its steel framework was de- signed by Gustav Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower. French cit- izens contributed the $250,000 for the statue itself, and Ameri- cans gave $250,000 for its pedestal on Bedloes Island, whose name was changed in 1956 to Liberty Island. Dedicated in 1886, the statue is now under the protection of the National Park Service, which administrates it along with Ellis Island, a former detention center for immigrants entering America, as part of the Statue of Liberty National Memorial. In the statue’s left arm is a tablet with the date July 4, 1776, engraved upon it. At its feet are the broken shackles of tyranny.
