词汇 | okra |
词源 | okra. Okra was so valuable in ancient Angola that tribes made “sharp knife” raids into neighbors’ fields to steal the vege- table, killing anyone who stood in their way. Okra derives ulti- mately from the Tshi nkruman. The Arabs held it to be a rare delicacy fit for weddings and other special occasions, naming it uehka, which means “a gift.” Okra is sometimes called ladyfin- gers in England, this name being suggested by the shape of the pods. |
