词源 | Comédie-Française. The French national theater, famous for its extensive repertoire of classical French drama, is also called the Théâtre-Français and La Maison de Molière, but it is best known as the Comédie-Française. Celebrated as “the glory of the French theater” by more than one critic, it was founded in 1680 and before the end of the decade moved into a playhouse built for it in an indoor tennis court, whose layout, with its boxes for spectators, was easily converted to a theater. Since 1770, it has remained at the site of what was the Palais Royal Theater, which is now called the Comédie-Française. The act- ing company is a cooperative society, each actor holding from one-quarter to one full share (depending on the actor’s experi- ence or importance) once he or she is admitted to the company. Admission comes after the actor successfully performs a role of his or her choosing and serves a salaried probationary peri- od of up to several years. At that point the actor becomes a full member, sharing in the company’s profits, and is entitled to a pension after twenty years’ service. The head of the company, called the doyen, is its oldest member. |
