词汇 conceive
词源
conceive. Conceive, ultimately from the Latin concipere, to take fully, to take in, can mean “to hold or form an opinion,” or “to become pregnant.” Both uses are illustrated in a story about 18th-century British author and politician Joseph Addison, who once gave a speech in the House of Commons beginning: “Mr. Speaker, I conceive—I conceive, sire—sir, I conceive—” At this point he was interrupted by a member who quipped: “The right honorable secretary of state has conceived thrice and brought forth nothing.” See proposition.
