词汇 | conceive |
词源 | conceive. Conceive, ultimately from the Latin concipere, to take fully, to take in, can mean “to hold or form an opinion,” or “to become pregnant.” Both uses are illustrated in a story about 18th-century British author and politician Joseph Addison, who once gave a speech in the House of Commons beginning: “Mr. Speaker, I conceive—I conceive, sire—sir, I conceive—” At this point he was interrupted by a member who quipped: “The right honorable secretary of state has conceived thrice and brought forth nothing.” See proposition. |
